Europe’s ‘century of humiliation’ could be just beginning

Thorsten Benner, director at the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin, explained that the trade deal results from Europe’s security weaknesses, its neglected military investment over 20 years, and its shortfalls in technology development and market integration. Similarly, Europe’s dismissal of warning signs recalls the Qing leadership’s historical oversights. Sabine Weyand, trade director-general at the European Commission, expressed regret about Europe ignoring a wake-up call from the first Trump administration, stressing the need for vigilance during a panel at the European Forum Alpbach. This sentiment was voiced before Trump’s recent tech rules critique.

An image captioned “After its defeat by the British in the First Opium War, the Qing dynasty signed a treaty in 1842 that condemned China to more than 100 years of foreign oppression and colonial control of trade policy” appeared with the article.

Trump’s unpredictable tariffs promise further challenges for the 27-nation EU, which must minimize its reliance on the U.S. in defense, tech, and finance to avoid sustained humiliation.

Stormy waters

The Treaty of Nanking in 1842 forced China to yield Hong Kong, pay an indemnity, and accept certain tariff conditions. Five “treaty ports” opened for British trade, marking the start of China’s “century of humiliation” due to enforced opium dealings, influencing its strategic decisions to date.

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—a delightful trip down history lane to remind us that we’re not quite the masters of our destiny. 🌍🤦‍♂️ Let’s just hope we don’t need a century of tea and biscuits to figure this one out!

Looks like Europe’s gearing up for a sequel to its historical blunders – ‘Century of Humiliation: The Return of the Trade Wars’ 🥳. Guess we’ll just watch the continent juggle tariffs while trying not to spill its tea… again. ☕️💼

  3. Looks like Europe’s just signed up for a masterclass in geopolitical blunders—next stop, ‘Humiliation: The Sequel’. 🚢🤦‍♂️ Who needs military investments when you can just let Trump write your trade policy, right?

Just what Europe needed—another chance to showcase its flair for self-sabotage! 🙄 Who knew a trade deal could feel like signing up for a lifetime supply of brussels sprouts? 🍻

Looks like Europe’s gearing up for an encore of historical blunders, eh? Maybe they should just slap a “Made in the 19th Century” sticker on their trade deals and call it a day. 😂

Looks like Europe’s playing a game of “how low can you go” with its security and tech investments. At this rate, we might as well start calling it the “century of getting schooled” instead! 😂

Just when you thought Europe had hit rock bottom, here comes the century-long sequel — who knew humiliation could be such a lucrative export! 🍷🚕 Let’s just hope their next trade deal comes with a complimentary sense of self-awareness.

Looks like Europe’s in for a lovely little déjà vu moment, eh? 🙄 Maybe next time they’ll take the hint before signing up for another century of being the continent’s punching bag.

Quite amusing how history has a knack for repeating itself, isn’t it? One minute we’re sipping espresso in a café, the next we’re signing treaties that make the Treaty of Nanking look like a friendly game of chess. 🤷‍♂️

Looks like Europe’s about to audition for a new reality show titled “Century of Humiliation: The Sequel”! 🤦‍♂️ With the amount of missed wake-up calls, they should consider investing in a decent alarm clock instead of military tech. 💤
