Radical Right Parties Oppose European Commission Vote

BRUSSELS – The far-right faction, Patriots for Europe, has announced its intention to oppose the new European Commission during the vote in the European Parliament on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the group criticized the recent hearings of the 26 candidate European Commissioners, labeling them a “farce” on Friday. Meanwhile, the Greens are set to announce their decision on Monday evening and have also voiced objections to the agreement reached earlier this week between the center-right EPP, the Social Democrats (S&D), and the liberal group Renew regarding the new Commissioners.

Currently, the Patriots rank as the third-largest party in the European Parliament, holding 84 out of 720 seats. The Greens, represented by 43 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), include parties like GroenLinks and PvdA. In contrast, the coalition of the EPP, S&D, and Renew commands a substantial majority with 401 seats. However, it’s important to note that voting patterns within the European Parliament can differ from party lines, unlike the more rigid party discipline often seen in The Hague.
