Merkel Claims Trump Was ‘Obsessed’ with Abundance of German Cars in New York

During her tenure as German chancellor, Angela Merkel — often regarded as the EU’s most powerful leader — frequently found herself at odds with U.S. President Donald Trump. Their interactions during Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021 were marked by trade disputes and his confrontational stance toward Europe.

However, Merkel dismissed the notion that Trump harbored personal resentment toward her. “No, in his eyes, I embodied Germany,” she explained in an interview with an Italian daily.

In the same discussion, Merkel addressed persistent rumors about her involvement in the political downfall of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi during the height of the eurozone crisis in 2011. “No, I deny it categorically,” she stated. “I have never interfered in the internal affairs of a friendly country.”

Merkel instead commended Berlusconi for his efforts to achieve “common European compromises,” though she acknowledged that collaboration with him became “more difficult” as the financial crisis deepened.
