Europe Urges Diplomacy Following US Strikes on Iran

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani proposed Rome as a venue for U.S.-Iran discussions, urging all parties to focus on the future. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized that military means won’t resolve the issue, advocating for negotiations to limit Iran’s nuclear program—a crucial matter for Israel, the region, and Europe. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighted Europe’s strong position in the conflict, noting Iran’s preference to negotiate with Europe while stressing the importance of U.S. involvement. Wadephul mentioned Europe’s urging of Iran to engage directly with the U.S., which wasn’t successful, possibly influencing current events. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on X that negotiations are essential to resolve the crisis. At Monday’s meeting, ministers remained diplomatic, avoiding specifics on U.S. involvement in restarting talks.
