Antwerp (Eurotoday Newspaper): Last night, an explosion in Deurne damaged a home, possibly linked to drug violence, which has risen nearly 30% in Antwerp this year. Journalist Caroline Van den Berghe reports that drugs are coming through the port, causing gang wars and violence. Brussels also saw a record 74 drug-related shootings this year.
Last night on 21 November, an explosion shocked residents of Ruimtevaartlaan in Deurne and damaged the front door and windows of a home. It has been said that this incident may be linked to drug violence, as one resident has a history of drug dealing. A similar explosion occurred in Ranst last week, and earlier this month, the police responded to two consecutive nights of explosions in Deurne and Borgerhout.
How is Antwerp addressing the 30% surge in drug-related crimes?
New police data shows that drug-related crimes in Antwerp are at a record high. There is almost a 30 percent increase compared to last year, with no signs of a decline. This includes visible violence like explosions and shootings, as well as hidden violence such as kidnappings and threats. Last year’s report already noted a rise in this hidden violence.
According to journalist blank” rel=”noopener”>Caroline Van den Berghe, drugs are coming into Antwerp through the port, leading to gang wars and street violence. She notes that many investigations, like the major SKY ECC heist, have disrupted the drug trade. Brussels is also noting more drug-related violence, with police reporting a record 74 shootings this year, most of which are connected to drugs.
