Paris – Théo Clerc, a French national, returned to France on Tuesday after spending 422 days in detention, following a presidential pardon from Azerbaijan announced by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who expressed his “immense relief.”
He remarked that it is “the honor and pride of French diplomacy and its agents to have acted tirelessly for his release” during his address to the National Assembly.
Additionally, sources from the European Union’s foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, noted her role in advocating for Clerc’s release during her visit to Azerbaijan in April.
Ms. Kallas emphasized in a message on X that this release demonstrates the impact of discreet diplomacy and respectful dialogue.
Théo Clerc, 38, had received a three-year prison sentence in September 2024 for graffiti in the Baku metro, amid rising tensions between France and Azerbaijan.
This sentence was labeled as “arbitrary” by Paris. (May 27, 2025)
