Kato Herbots from Genk Claims OVAM Ecodesign Award 2023 for Groundbreaking Solar Project

Genk (Eurotoday): Kato Herbots, 23, from Sint-Truiden, won the OVAM Ecodesign Award for Students 2023 for her project “Residents of Solar Space.” Her designs include a UV-sensitive beach towel and a vitamin D sweater, promoting sustainability. She graduated from LUCA School of Arts in Genk.

The OVAM Ecodesign Award for Students 2023, organized by OVAM and Vlaanderen Circulair, celebrated innovative and sustainable student designs. The award aims to promote the circular economy by recognizing young designers who focus on environmental and social responsibility. This year’s ceremony featured impressive contributions in various categories, showcasing students’ creativity in addressing important environmental challenges.

What innovative designs earned Kato Herbots the OVAM Ecodesign Award 2023?

In the ‘Human Interest’ and ‘Inspiring Design’ categories, 23-year-old Kato Herbots from Sint-Truiden won the top award. Recently graduated with a master’s degree in Product Design from the LUCA School of Arts in Genk, Kato impressed the judges with a project that combined usefulness and sustainability. They mentioned that her design met important human needs and encouraged people to think about eco-friendly solutions.

Kato Herbots won an award for her project called “Residents of Solar Space.” She made a beach towel with a sundial that tells you how long you can stay in the sun safely, depending on the UV level and skin type. Kato also created a sweater that lets in UV rays to help people get enough vitamin D in winter. She believes that instead of just using sunscreen and vitamin D pills, we can be smarter about the materials we choose, which is better for our health and the planet. Kato is happy to be recognized for her work and glad that her new ideas are appreciated.

Well, isn’t that just fab? A beach towel with a sundial—who needs a holiday when you can just sunbathe like a true philosopher? 😂 I guess next year’s hottest accessory will be a survival guide for dodging sunburn; what a revolutionary idea! 🌞

Well, who knew a beach towel could be both a fashion statement and a UV compliance officer? 🌞 Just when you thought sustainability had peaked, here comes a young genius from Genk to remind us that sunbathing now comes with a side of eco-lecturing! 🙄

  3. So, we’re really handing out awards for beach towels now? 🌞 Because nothing screams “eco-friendly” like a sweater that doubles as a sunbathing strategy – what’s next, a hat that recycles your bad decisions? 😂

Well, Kato Herbots is saving the planet one UV-sensitive towel at a time—because who doesn’t need a fabric fashion accessory that doubles as a sun safety guide? 😂 Next thing you know, we’ll be needing a degree just to choose which vitamin D sweater to wear!

  5. Oh, fantastic! A beach towel that tells you when to stop roasting like a Belgian frites! Because nothing says “I care about the planet” quite like a UV-sensitive accessory, right? 🌞🧴

  6. A UV-sensitive beach towel and a vitamin D sweater? Brilliant, just what we need to remind us we live in a country where the sun thinks it’s on holiday 90% of the year! 🌧️☀️

So, let me get this straight: a beach towel that tells you when to stop frying like a sausage in the sun? Sounds like a genius solution for those who can’t be trusted with a simple bottle of sunscreen! 🌞😏
