BRUSSELS (ANP) – General Robert Brieger, chairman of the Military Committee of the European Union (EUMC), stated that the challenges Europe faces are “real, complex, and interconnected.” He emphasized that addressing these issues requires more than mere rhetoric; it demands political commitment, unity, and actionable resources.
Brieger highlighted the ongoing discussions regarding a potential EU mission in Ukraine, which have yet to yield any concrete decisions.
He also stressed the importance of taking tangible steps concerning Article 427 of the EU treaty, which mandates mutual support in the event of an attack on an EU member state. “As military professionals, we seek clarity on what military-operational measures can be implemented under this article,” he remarked.
According to Brieger, there is a pressing need to significantly enhance the production of defense materials to address critical deficiencies, including in areas such as artillery, ammunition, air defense, anti-drone systems, and military transport vehicles.
“Following the Cold War, we benefitted from a peace dividend,” Brieger noted. “However, rectifying these gaps will take years unless there is both the necessary political determination and adequate incentives for the defense sector.”
He acknowledged that the European Commission and several EU member states are taking initiatives to “move forward in this area.”
