French Agriculture Minister Visits Budapest and Vienna to Oppose Mercosur Agreement

Paris – On Friday, French Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard visited Budapest, where Hungary’s Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy reiterated the country’s opposition to the ongoing free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, as reported by AFP.

Genevard also plans to travel to Vienna in her efforts to build a coalition against the deal within the EU.

“The goal is to engage with countries likely to support our stance against this agreement,” she stated. “During my meeting with Minister Nagy and Peter Szijjarto, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, we had an in-depth discussion.”

“We both recognize the detrimental impact this agreement could have on the agricultural sectors in our countries, as the anticipated influx of meat imports from Mercosur nations (including beef and poultry) threatens to destabilize our markets.”

In contrast, Berlin is supportive of the agreement and is pushing for a swift ratification process. Genevard is scheduled to meet with her German counterpart in Paris on Monday. (May 16, 2025)

Oh, brilliant! Who knew a stroll through Budapest and Vienna could double as a ‘Let’s Save Our Farms’ tour? 🚜🍷 Because nothing says “European unity” like a good ol’ trade spat over who gets to keep their sausages! 😂

So, let me get this straight: while the Germans are all in for a meat party, the French are busy saving their vineyards and cheese from the Mercosur invasion. Classic Europe, where we argue over imports like it’s a Michelin star restaurant competition! 😂🥖

Oh, fantastic, another European roadshow to save the agriculture sector—because, you know, nothing says “priorities” like flying around to plead against a trade deal while the rest of us are just trying to keep the lights on. 🌍✈️

Oh, brilliant move by the French—who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned agricultural showdown? 🌾 I suppose nothing says “European unity” quite like a trip to Vienna to rally against a deal that might just spice up the dinner plates! 😂🍽️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “let’s unite Europe” like a good ol’ jaunt across borders to rally against a trade deal. I mean, who needs unity when you can just keep your local farmers clutching their pitchforks, right? 🇫🇷🚜

Oh, brilliant, just what we need—another trans-European tour to stamp out a deal over some meat! 🥩 As if a little beef from Mercosur is going to ruin the French and Hungarian gastronomic legacy; bon appétit, indeed! 😏

So, the French Minister is off on a diplomatic tour to save the day – or at least, save the baguettes. 🍞 Good luck convincing the Germans; they’re probably just wondering how they can get more sausages into their bratwurst! 😏

A lovely little jaunt around Europe just to say “non” to a trade deal—because who needs cheaper meat when you have the finest baguettes and goulash? 😏 But hey, at least they’re keeping the agricultural nostalgia alive while the rest of us just want a decent steak without a passport! 🍷✈️

Seems like the French Minister is on a little European tour, spreading the word against Mercosur—because who needs free trade when you can just have overpriced cheese and wine, right? 🍷🥖 No worries, I’m sure those beef imports are just a mirage in the charming fields of Budapest and Vienna! 😏

Oh, look who’s off on a diplomatic tour to save the day—next stop, the ‘Not-So-Free Trade Agreement’ theme park! 🌍🥩 I can almost hear the cows moo-ing their complaints from here! 😄

Fancy a jaunt across Europe just to say “no” to some beef imports? Classic move, really—who needs trade deals when you can just gather in fancy meeting rooms and sip espresso while plotting against the meat of the month club? 😂🥩 #DiplomacyAtItsFinest

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams European unity like a good old agricultural brawl over meat imports. 🌍🥩 Next up, a four-part documentary on the riveting saga of who gets to keep their sausages safe! 😂

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—more meetings to discuss how to keep our delicious, overpriced cheeses safe from the “danger” of foreign beef. Because nothing says “European unity” like fighting over who gets to keep their markets cozy and exclusive! 🧀🇪🇺

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a good ol’ tour of Central Europe to rally the troops against a trade deal, right? 😂 I can already see the Mercosur cows shivering in their boots! 🐄

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we’re all in this together” like a French minister traipsing around Eastern Europe, trying to form an anti-steak coalition. Who needs trade when you can just keep the beef at bay, eh? 🥩🇫🇷
