Oostkamp (Eurotoday) – Farmers near Oostkamp are now using a newly installed, quiet underwater pump at Westdijk to rapidly fill 25,000-litre water tanks in just four minutes—eliminating the need for noisy tractors and easing traffic congestion. The initiative has received strong backing from Mayor Jan de Keyser.
According to VRT News, the ongoing drought has created a pressing need for water among farmers in the East Camp region. To tackle this, authorities have set up a water supply point at the Westdijk in Moerbrugge, near Oostkamp in the province of West Flanders, Belgium, providing easier access to water for local agriculture.
Mayor Jan de Keyser, in collaboration with the province and farmers, helped engineer a quieter and more efficient solution following challenges from the previous year. The new pump, now submerged underwater, operates with significantly less noise, improving overall conditions for residents and reducing the environmental impact.
This improvement enables farmers to collect water more efficiently, without relying on noisy tractors or disrupting road traffic. The mayor highlighted that the system helps farmers deal with the drought while simultaneously benefiting the local environment and community well-being.
How does the new pump at Westdijk benefit farmers and the community?
Officials state that the new pump is fast and quiet—capable of fully filling a 25,000-litre tank in as little as four minutes. This allows farmers to access much-needed water quickly, especially during the dry summer months when demand is at its peak.
The facility will remain available for use throughout the summer. Authorities and residents alike are hoping for rainfall soon, as many homeowners are also affected by the dry conditions, which impact gardens and lawns.
To ensure peaceful coexistence with the local community, restrictions have been placed on the hours farmers are allowed to pump water. Nighttime pumping is prohibited between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. to preserve quiet for residents. On school days, pumping is further restricted until 8:30 a.m. to reduce traffic issues and enhance safety around school zones.
While a similar setup was in place in 2024, the key advancement this year is the installation of the new underwater pump. Previously, farmers relied on tractors to pump water from the Ghent–Ostend canal, a method that generated constant noise and caused traffic problems, much to the frustration of both residents and commuters.

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “innovation” quite like a quiet underwater pump making farmers feel like they’re running a spa instead of a farm. 🌊💧 Because who needs noisy tractors when you can sneak in a water refill at the crack of dawn? Next, maybe they’ll invent a pump that brews coffee too! ☕️😏
