Skopje – North Macedonia has made significant progress and needs to continue on this trajectory. The accession process resembles a marathon rather than a sprint. It is a challenging journey that can be frustrating at times, a common experience for all previous candidate countries. However, they all reached their goals, and with your determination, hard work, and collaboration, you too will overcome the challenges ahead, stated Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Christian Mitskoski.
Costa highlighted that EU enlargement represents the most strategic investment in peace and stability. He praised the government’s efforts regarding the reform agenda and acknowledged the progress made thus far, reaffirming that North Macedonia’s future lies within the EU.
– I urge the Prime Minister to continue his efforts to facilitate further advancements. You have the support of the EU, which stands ready to help you seize this momentum. It is vital to maintain the focus on reforms and to strengthen the rule of law and the fight against corruption. I commend your alignment with our shared foreign and security policies, Costa added.
In response, Prime Minister Mitskoski expressed that the country’s commitment to the EU process will deepen as they work to unlock their European aspirations with dignity.
– Our dedication to the EU integration process will be reinforced moving forward, as we believe our future lies within the European family. As President Costa mentioned, while the path to the EU can be frustrating, the citizens of this country have already undertaken the hardest journey. I am hopeful that we will soon unlock the European process with dignity and become a respected part of the European family, emphasized Prime Minister Mitskoski. (May 15, 2025)
