Heist-op-den-Berg (Eurotoday) – Stuw Heist, a crucial youth care centre in Heist-op-den-Berg, is at risk of closure due to insufficient funding and limited space. Director Luc De Win is appealing for support. Those who can help are encouraged to reach out to Sofie Blom.
According to VRT News, the Day Centre Stuw Heist, located in the Antwerp province municipality of Heist-op-den-Berg, Belgium, may soon shut down. The centre plays a vital role in supporting young people and families facing difficulties, offering personalized care and a safe, structured environment for activities after school, on weekends, and on Wednesday afternoons.
The centre is considered essential for young people in need of consistent support and a stable setting. However, it currently lacks a new location. The municipality has no suitable property available, and due to recent budget cuts, the centre cannot afford to rent a facility. Financial constraints have made it impossible to accumulate the necessary funds for relocation.
What’s Next for Stuw Heist?
Luc De Win, director of the Antwerp Youth Care division at Don Bosco Flanders, emphasized the significance of Stuw Heist, stating that its closure would deeply impact the community. Families and youth who rely on its services would be forced to seek support elsewhere, such as Jeugdhulp Don Bosco, which may already be stretched thin or less accessible.
De Win stressed that the ongoing struggle to find a new location, alongside financial challenges, is putting vital services in jeopardy. If Stuw Heist is forced to close, the youth and families it currently helps would lose an essential lifeline, reducing the community’s access to necessary care and support that improves lives.
“In Heist-op-den-Berg, there is a major shortage of youth care, our waiting list proves that.”
Luc De Win
De Win further noted the urgent need for the centre to continue its operations, citing the long waiting lists as evidence of an already overstretched youth care system in the region. Stuw Heist also collaborates closely with other support services in the area, making its presence even more essential.
While the town’s mayor has acknowledged the issue, there are currently no suitable buildings available. However, the municipality has expressed openness to financial discussions if needed. In the meantime, Stuw Heist is reaching out to the community for assistance in securing a new location. They’re seeking a space that can accommodate offices, activity areas, and a kitchen. Individuals or organizations able to help are encouraged to contact Sofie Blom at sofie.blom@jeugdhulpdonbosco.be.
The centre remains hopeful that with community support, it can continue providing vital care and safe spaces for young people and families in Heist-op-den-Berg.

Oh great, another crucial youth care centre on the chopping block. Must be a special talent to turn a community lifeline into an abandoned building; who needs stability for the youngsters anyway? 🤷♂️

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—another youth care centre on the chopping block. Perhaps we should just build a lovely coffee shop instead; after all, who needs a safe space for our kids when we can have artisanal lattes? ☕️😏

Gotta love how a youth care centre is facing closure while the municipality has no suitable buildings—so what’s the plan, build a nice little tent? 🏕️ Typical, innit? Just another day in the land of “we’ll get to it eventually.” 🙄

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—another day centre on the chopping block. Let’s see if we can magically conjure up a building while we’re at it. 🏢✨

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need – a youth care centre on the chopping block in a town where waiting lists are longer than the average Belgian queue for frites. 🙄 Maybe we can just turn it into another chocolate shop instead? 🍫
