The newly introduced package places significant emphasis on smaller agricultural enterprises, aiming to improve their access to European funding and provide them with increased flexibility regarding environmental regulations. The Commission also intends to streamline oversight for agricultural businesses, proposing that inspections be limited to once a year for farms.
According to the Commission, these initiatives could potentially save farmers over 1.5 billion euros annually and reduce government expenditures by 210 million euros each year. Furthermore, it assures that the relaxation of regulations will not compromise the environmental goals outlined in the existing common agricultural policy.
These proposals must be approved by the member states and the European Parliament. MEP Wouter Beke (CD&V/EPP) supports the initiatives, stating they provide farmers with “more responsibility and opportunities, rather than confining them within overly rigid regulations.” Conversely, Sara Matthieu (Green/Greens) contends that the Commission is indeed reducing its environmental aspirations. “Farmers are being granted subsidies again without any obligations to contribute to environmental or ecological efforts in their regions,” she remarks.
