Ghent Helps 700 Out of Poverty Amid Concerns Over Federal Budget Cuts

Ghent – The city of Ghent has successfully lifted nearly 700 individuals out of poverty, yet it continues to face serious challenges, with an estimated 31,000 residents still living in poverty and around 2,500 experiencing homelessness. Alderman Astrid De Brucker acknowledges the progress but warns that potential funding cuts could jeopardize support for the city’s most vulnerable population.

According to a report by VRT News, Ghent has made notable strides in reducing poverty and homelessness over the past seven years. The poverty rate has gradually declined, but a significant number of residents remain affected. Approximately 18% of children in the city are born into low-income families, though this figure is slowly decreasing.

Homelessness remains a pressing issue with close to 2,500 people lacking permanent housing. Despite this, the city has managed to provide stable housing solutions to 675 homeless individuals in the past year by collaborating with local organizations and nonprofits committed to tackling poverty.

Could Ghent’s Anti-Poverty Progress Be Undermined by Funding Freezes?

In a symbolic move to draw attention to homelessness, advocacy groups have set up tents in public areas across Ghent. While the city has made progress, there is rising concern that looming financial restrictions could undermine these efforts. Nonprofits fear that losing financial support will hinder their ability to assist struggling residents.

“It is quite invisible work of the city services, but it is a lever to combat poverty,”

said Alderman Astrid De Brucker (Voor Gent) during the presentation of the most recent city report.

The city has voiced serious concerns over a decision by Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt to temporarily freeze €11 million in financial assistance. This critical funding is used by municipalities like Ghent to help residents with minimum incomes cover essential costs such as rent, utilities, and daily necessities.

Without this support, officials fear many could fall deeper into poverty. Currently, around 35,000 people in Ghent rely on municipal assistance. City leaders anticipate that number may increase significantly due to new national policies, such as reductions in unemployment benefits.

With increasing demand and no corresponding increase in government funding, Ghent leaders warn that maintaining current levels of support will be difficult. The deputy mayor emphasized that while the city will be expected to step in, it won’t receive additional financial backing from the national government.
