Sofia Zacharaki, the Minister of Education, attended the EU Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Ministers’ Summit in Brussels, where she highlighted key discussion points with her fellow ministers. The focus was on the resilience of Greek schools amid various crises and the importance of the Skills Laboratory.
“During the EU Education Ministers’ Summit, we will address two main themes: the resilience of Greek schools, students, and teachers in the face of ongoing challenges, and the enhancement of skill development. I will discuss the Skills Laboratory, covering what students gain through school such as environmental education, STEM skills, and lessons on inclusivity and empathy. These foundational skills are crucial for collaboration, learning how to learn, and fostering critical thinking,” she stated.
Upon her arrival at the summit, Ms. Zacharaki emphasized the digital resources that have been made available to public schools and the ongoing efforts to enhance skills education. “I will highlight our initiatives in crisis management, the establishment of a digital school, and the digital tools provided to public schools.” She also mentioned the psychosocial support systems in place for both teachers and students, including the involvement of psychologists and social workers, as well as essential training for educators. She underscored the importance of cultivating skills, principles, and values within the school environment.
At the summit, the Education Ministers are also deliberating on the European quality assurance and recognition framework for higher education, as well as the newly announced Skills Union aimed at bolstering the European Educational Area. Ms. Zacharaki spoke about the internationalization of Greek universities, which is another crucial topic of today’s discussions.
“Today’s summit will cover internationalization and the global engagement of universities. Greece will showcase a positive development: our partnership between Greek universities and international institutions. This initiative represents an ongoing effort towards internationalization that has been supported by the Ministry of Education for many years,” she concluded. (12/5/25)
