The fearless and determined presence of Generation Z in Iran’s 2021 street protests was nothing short of remarkable. In Iran, those born between 1995 and 2008 are often referred to as “Generation Z.”
Raised amid the digital revolution, this generation is shaped by their deep engagement with the internet. With over 70% internet penetration, they are immersed in global cultures and ideas, significantly diminishing the influence of the regime’s traditional, theocratic narrative pushed through state-controlled education, media, and cinema. These young Iranians are outspoken, resistant to control, and unwilling to self-censor. They express themselves freely and refuse to let repression extinguish their hopes.
Highly connected and self-reliant, Generation Z turns to online spaces for solutions, bypassing traditional institutions. As one social researcher observed, many in this generation are not merely rejecting the current system—they are actively envisioning and building alternatives.
Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, Iran’s judiciary chief, recently disclosed that more than 90,000 protest-related cases were opened in 2021—many involving students, university-aged youth, and educators. The Iranian Resistance reported that over 20,000 individuals were arrested during the first two weeks of the uprising alone.
This wave of youth-led defiance shocked the regime, prompting intensified repression, particularly in educational institutions. A notable escalation was a controversial agreement between the Ministry of Education and national law enforcement allowing police to be stationed in schools—an unprecedented move underscoring the regime’s fear of Generation Z.
The very generation the regime sought to keep uninformed is now challenging its legitimacy head-on.
The “Poisoned Chalice” of Nuclear Talks
The phrase “poisoned chalice” was famously used by Ayatollah Khomeini when he reluctantly accepted a ceasefire in the Iran-Iraq war, despite previously insisting he would fight “until the last house in Tehran.” For Khomeini, the war was intrinsically linked to the regime’s survival, making the ceasefire a bitter defeat.
Today, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei faces a similarly grim conundrum. For years, the regime’s defiance and narrative of resistance have been intertwined with its nuclear ambitions. But now, mounting domestic unrest and international pressure have forced him into a corner.
Courage Has Surpassed Fear
Even the regime’s increasing use of executions since 2021 has failed to suppress resistance. The bravery of Iran’s youth now exceeds their fear, compelling Khamenei to consider negotiations.
Across the country, thousands of resistance units—mobile teams of young activists conducting anti-regime missions—have become a persistent threat to the authorities. Khamenei understands that further international pressure or military confrontation could ignite a nationwide uprising—this time with the organization and resolve to challenge the regime’s hold on power.
A Secret Nuclear Site Revealed
On May 8, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) revealed information about a clandestine nuclear facility in Semnan Province, code-named “Ranginkaman” (Rainbow). Officially registered under the fake company Diba Energy Sina, which claims to manufacture chemicals for the petrochemical industry, the site is actually affiliated with SPND, Iran’s organization for nuclear weapons development.
The facility’s purpose reportedly involves designing warheads for missiles capable of traveling over 3,000 kilometers. The use of tritium—a radioactive isotope used in nuclear weapons—heightens global security concerns.
Rumors of a Deal
Reports from media linked to the regime suggest the U.S. and Iran may be exploring renewed nuclear cooperation, possibly involving joint uranium enrichment in a third-party country. Some even speculate on the possibility of an unprecedented meeting between Iran’s president and Donald Trump.
Regardless of their truth, such claims must be viewed with skepticism. The Islamic Republic has repeatedly violated nuclear agreements—such as exceeding the 3.67% enrichment cap set by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), going as far as enriching uranium to 60%.
The exposure of yet another covert nuclear site is a stark reminder: ignoring Tehran’s nuclear ambitions could once again push the region toward crisis, as history has demonstrated.

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we’re in control” quite like stationing police in schools—because what better way to inspire the youth than with a touch of fear, right? 🤦♂️

The youth in Iran really know how to throw a protest party, don’t they? 🤷♂️ Maybe the regime should consider a group discount on therapy for their fear of the internet-savvy Gen Z—it’s clearly doing wonders for their courage! 😂

Oh, splendid, just what we needed—young Iranians taking on the regime with more sass than a French waiter! Must be a delightful sight for Khamenei, like watching a cat chase its own tail while the world holds its breath. 😂
