Paris – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has characterized the Netherlands’ request for a review of the association agreement between the European Union and Israel as “legitimate,” urging the European Commission to take action on the issue. This call comes in light of the ongoing blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has persisted for over two months.
In remarks made on Sunday to public broadcasters and the daily Le Monde, Barrot noted that the Netherlands is seeking an analysis from the European Commission regarding the Israeli government’s adherence to Article 2 of the association agreement with Israel.
He stressed that the relationship between the EU and Israel should be grounded in the respect for human rights and democratic values.
“We must acknowledge the harsh reality,” Barrot stated. “Palestinians in Gaza are suffering from hunger and thirst and are deprived of basic necessities. The Gaza Strip is currently teetering on the edge of chaos, facing imminent famine.” He further criticized what he described as the “incomprehensible attitude of the Israeli government.” (May 11, 2025)
