Olaf Gill, the European Commission’s spokesperson for Trade, expressed appreciation for the recent announcement by the US and China indicating a temporary suspension of tariffs for 90 days. During a press conference, he was questioned about the implications of this agreement for Europe, particularly in the context of its own negotiations with the US.
Gill emphasized that the European Union has consistently maintained that the imposition of tariffs represents a retrogressive step in global trade and the economy. He stated, “We welcome any efforts that counter this trend, as they promote the smooth operation of global supply chains and enhance stability and predictability in trade and investments, provided that global regulatory frameworks are fully adhered to.”
Europe – US Negotiations
When queried about ongoing trade discussions between Europe and the US concerning tariffs, Gill reiterated that no announcements would be made at this time, as the negotiations are still in progress. He also addressed a question regarding the recent trade agreement between the US and the UK, noting that the European Commission is thoroughly analyzing the agreement. He assured that the EU will carefully evaluate its content and potential impacts, particularly in relation to EU interests and the broader global trade landscape. (12/5/25)
