Brussels – European Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has called for deeper integration between the EU and Ukrainian defence sectors amid growing threats from Russia.
Speaking at a defence industry forum in Brussels, Kubilius underscored that “Ukraine is enduring severe aggression” from Russia and warned that
“we are also experiencing hybrid attacks, which may precede military assaults.”
Why is EU-Ukraine defence integration now a priority?
“To stop Putin, we need to produce more, we need to innovate more, and we need to do that
together in the European Union and with Ukraine,”
Kubilius made the remarks while addressing government officials and key defence industry players in the Belgian capital. He announced the establishment of a joint EU-Ukraine task force, which is set to meet for the first time on Monday. The team will focus on integrating defence industries and launching collaborative projects, including joint procurement programs.
Kubilius, who formerly served as Lithuania’s prime minister, highlighted Ukraine’s innovations in drone technology and artificial intelligence as areas from which Europe could learn.
“In the future, when Europe will need to take the whole responsibility for the defence of the European continent, Ukraine will be the most important part of the new European security architecture,”
he said.
Should frozen Russian funds support Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts?
Recently, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met with EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius to discuss Ukraine’s military needs and the potential confiscation of frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction.
Shmyhal said discussions included boosting military-industrial cooperation and specific strategies to reinforce Kyiv’s defence capabilities.
“We are grateful to the EU for its important military support,”
he added, emphasizing that frozen Russian assets should be used to “strengthen our state.” He also noted that both parties explored “concrete steps to make Russia pay” for damage caused by the ongoing war.
The European Commission continues to push for the use of profits earned from frozen Russian central bank assets to help Ukraine.
