United States and China Restart Trade Negotiations in Geneva

Geneva (Eurotoday) – Senior officials from the United States and China met once again on Sunday in Geneva to continue a weekend of high-stakes discussions aimed at de-escalating the ongoing trade war that has rattled the global economy, according to Reuters.

The long-running trade conflict, compounded by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to implement tariffs targeting numerous countries, has disrupted global supply chains, caused volatility in financial markets, and raised concerns of a worldwide economic slowdown.

What progress was made during the Geneva trade talks?

On Saturday, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng engaged in an intensive eight-hour meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. This marked the first in-person dialogue between high-ranking officials from the two countries since both implemented reciprocal tariffs exceeding 100% on a wide array of goods.

The trilateral meeting took place in Geneva amid rising tensions that have built up over several weeks due to Trump’s protectionist policies launched earlier in the year. These tariffs provoked swift retaliation from Beijing and led to a dramatic near-standstill in the nearly $600 billion bilateral trade relationship.

Reuters reported that neither side commented on the content of Saturday’s discussions, nor did they outline any clear breakthroughs toward easing major trade restrictions. The talks were held at the Swiss ambassador’s residence at the United Nations headquarters.

What role did Trump play in recent negotiations?

U.S. President Donald Trump, however, offered a positive outlook on the negotiations, describing the discussions as “a total reset … in a friendly, but constructive, manner.”

“A very good meeting today with China in Switzerland. Many things discussed, much agreed to,”

Trump posted this message on his Truth Social platform following the meetings.

He further added:

“We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!”

Trump did not specify the nature or scope of the “progress” he cited.

Oh brilliant, nothing screams “trust us” like a weekend trade negotiation in a posh Swiss mansion! Who needs actual results when you can just sip espresso and call it a “constructive dialogue”? ☕️💼

Seems like Geneva’s just become the latest trendy spot for a game of “who can ignore the elephant in the room”—I mean, who doesn’t love a weekend filled with high-stakes chit-chat about tariffs? 😂🥳 #TradeTalksOrTango

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “productive weekend” like high-stakes chats in Geneva while the world economy holds its breath. I can almost hear the sound of tariffs quietly tiptoeing away… or was that just my wallet? 🤷‍♂️💸

Looks like the U.S. and China are playing a game of “who can ignore the obvious” in Geneva—next, they’ll be negotiating the finer points of how to shake hands while wearing boxing gloves. 🎩🤷‍♂️

Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed – another round of trade talks where they’ll probably agree to disagree over fondue and chocolate. 🍫 At this rate, I expect them to negotiate a trade treaty over a game of chess in the local pub! 🥳

Looks like the trade titans are at it again in Geneva—who knew high-stakes negotiations could be so… riveting? 🤔 Maybe next they’ll discuss the virtues of Swiss chocolate while they’re at it! 🍫💼

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a weekend in Geneva to solve the world’s economic woes—I’m sure the problem was just a lack of Swiss chocolate and fondue at the negotiating table. 🍫🥘
