Tiranë (Eurotoday) – On Sunday, Albanians will head to the polls in a high-stakes election that could grant Prime Minister Edi Rama a historic fourth term or shift momentum to his long-standing political opponent, in what is seen as a decisive moment for Albania’s ambitions to join the European Union.
How does Sali Berisha challenge Rama’s leadership?
With a population of 2.8 million and 3.7 million registered voters—many from the diaspora participating by mail for the first time—the country will elect 140 parliamentary representatives for four-year terms from 2,046 candidates. These candidates represent 11 political parties and coalitions.
The international community is viewing this election as a critical test of Albania’s democratic institutions after a polarizing and heated campaign between Rama and veteran opposition leader Sali Berisha. Over 2,000 domestic and international observers will monitor the voting process, which will run from 7:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) to 7:00 p.m. (1700 GMT).
Will Edi Rama secure a historic fourth term?
Prime Minister Edi Rama, 60, has led the Socialist Party since 2005 and is seeking his fourth consecutive term in office. A former student activist and once mayor of Tirana, Rama first became prime minister in 2013.
His overarching goal is Albania’s accession to the European Union by 2030. However, his administration has faced increasing opposition in the past year due to allegations of narrowing political space and silencing dissent, particularly targeting Berisha.
Is opposition to Rama growing amid corruption claims?
Rama’s government has also been embroiled in a number of corruption scandals, most notably involving Tirana’s mayor, Erion Veliaj, a close political ally recently arrested on charges of corruption and money laundering. While Rama continues to emphasize his commitment to fulfilling EU entry requirements, critics argue that deep-rooted corruption and governance challenges could hinder Albania’s prospects of joining the bloc within the proposed timeline.
How does Sali Berisha challenge Rama’s leadership?
At 80, Sali Berisha remains one of Albania’s most enduring political figures. A former president and prime minister, Berisha has led the conservative Democratic Party of Albania since its inception in 1990 following the protest movements that ended communist rule.
Berisha is critical of Albania’s EU readiness and has argued that the country has regressed under Rama’s leadership. Nonetheless, Berisha himself is a controversial figure, having faced corruption accusations and internal party disputes. His populist campaign style included the early adoption of a slogan echoing that of former U.S. President Donald Trump—”Make Albania Great Again”—which later evolved into “Grandiose Albania.”
Preliminary election results are expected within two days of the vote. The timing coincides with a summit hosted in Albania, at which European Union and other European leaders will convene to discuss regional security and economic initiatives.

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a good ol’ election to spice up the EU’s coffee break. Let’s watch Edi juggle corruption and democracy like a seasoned clown while Sali plays the grandpa card—who needs stability when you have drama, eh? 🍿😏

Oh, marvellous! Just what Europe needs, a riveting showdown between a prime minister who’s been in power longer than some of us have been alive and his opponent, who’s been around since before the internet. Can’t wait to see if they can both manage to banter over the EU while dodging the corruption scandals like it’s a game of dodgeball! 🎉🙄

Oh, splendid! Just what we need: another election where the candidates are practically auditioning for a reality show called “Survivor: Balkan Edition.” 🍿 Can’t wait to see if Edi Rama can charm his way into a fourth term while dodging corruption claims like a pro!

Certainly looks like Albanian democracy is having its own version of a soap opera. 🎭 Who knew securing a fourth term could be so riveting—maybe next season they’ll throw in a talent show for the candidates too! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “let’s join the EU” quite like a good ol’ political dogfight between a prime minister accused of corruption and a former president who’s been recycling slogans since the ’90s. 🍿 Just when you thought politics couldn’t get any more entertaining—cheers to Albania for keeping the drama alive! 😂
