WARSAW (ANP) – During Thursday’s informal meeting, no decision was reached regarding the investigation. A resolution may be considered at the upcoming official gathering of foreign ministers in Brussels on May 20.
EU foreign chief Kaja Kallas indicated that the request from Veldkamp will be addressed further at that time.
“This matter is being taken very seriously,” Veldkamp stated. “I observe a substantial coalition of countries that recognize the ongoing blockade of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip as a significant issue, alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu’s security cabinet’s decision to escalate the conflict.”
Veldkamp emphasized the importance of this message, especially as it comes from nations traditionally allied with Israel, such as the Netherlands and Germany.
While Israel is displeased with the call for an investigation, Veldkamp reassured, “The Netherlands has always provided an honest perspective, and that has not changed.” He has served as an ambassador in Israel.
Kallas noted the “immense frustration among member states” regarding the inability to alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza, which is exacerbated by the lack of food aid and increased violence from Israel.
Veldkamp argued that Israel is violating Article 2 of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel, which mandates respect for human rights and democratic principles.
