Earlier this week, the UK Ministry of Defence announced that Admiral Sir Ben Key has “stepped back due to private reasons,” according to the Financial Times. The newspaper reported that sources familiar with the situation stated Key’s departure is unrelated to the upcoming strategic defense review, which is expected to be released soon.
Key, who has served as the head of the Royal Navy since 2021, was already scheduled to retire this summer. As a result, the process of selecting his replacement had already begun.
Last year, Key issued a public apology for what he described as “intolerable” misogyny within the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service. His statement followed multiple investigations revealing serious issues, including sexual harassment, bullying, and assault experienced by women serving in the navy, as reported by The Guardian.
