Shanghai (China) – At an event in Shanghai on Friday, EU Ambassador Jorge Toledo expressed concerns that barriers to entering the Chinese market are not decreasing but actually increasing. “We have not been taken seriously regarding trade restrictions,” he remarked.
Toledo emphasized that European companies face unfair competitive conditions in China, adding, “The situation is not getting better… Action needs to be taken.”
In response, Beijing claimed that its relationship with Europe provides “valuable stability” amidst the upheaval caused by the United States.
However, the relationship between Europe and China remains complicated. Europe has imposed restrictions on Chinese investments in sensitive industries and implemented additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
Despite these challenges, China remains the EU’s second largest economic partner, following the United States. Nonetheless, European businesses have consistently raised concerns over the preferential treatment that local firms receive in the Chinese market. (May 9, 2025)
