Brussels’ Kunstberg Fountain Restored After €210K Renovation

Brussels (Eurotoday) – The iconic fountain in Brussels’ Kunstberg Garden has been fully restored following a €210,000 renovation. Originally designed by landscape architect René Péchère, the fountain remains a central feature of the historic garden and is now supported by a comprehensive two-year maintenance plan to ensure its proper functioning and preservation.

According to VRT News, the large fountain underwent an extensive refurbishment process, which included a complete overhaul and the establishment of a follow-up care program to maintain its pristine condition. The plan includes regular inspections, necessary repairs, and special precautions during the winter months to protect the fountain from freezing temperatures.

How was the Kunstberg Garden fountain in Brussels restored and preserved?

Officials explained that a key part of the maintenance plan is the annual servicing of pumps and control systems. This includes winterizing the fountain by draining water and safeguarding critical components against frost damage. Each spring, a full operational test will be conducted to ensure the system runs smoothly for the warmer months ahead.

The renovation, which began in August 2024, focused on cleaning and restoring all essential elements of the fountain. The basin was emptied and cleared of dirt, algae, and mineral deposits, while broken components such as pipes, nozzles, pumps, and lighting fixtures were either repaired or replaced. Leaks were addressed by upgrading seals and waterproofing measures to ensure long-term durability.

Officials emphasized the project’s goal of both aesthetic improvement and functional longevity. Now fully restored, the fountain is operational and once again a highlight of the Kunstberg Garden, delighting visitors with its visual beauty and historic charm.

The garden, created by René Péchère between 1957 and 1958, exemplifies his talent for blending urban elements with natural beauty. By incorporating art, architecture, and greenery, Péchère designed the space as a peaceful urban retreat for residents and tourists alike.

Authorities noted that preserving the fountain is vital to maintaining the garden’s historical and artistic significance. The renovation and ongoing care plan aim to keep the fountain a prominent and functional feature in the heart of Brussels for years to come.

Just what we needed—another fountain with a €210K price tag to remind us that our tax euros are best spent on keeping water splashing instead of fixing the roads! 💧 Who knew a bit of H2O magic could cost more than my last holiday in Spain? 😏

Ah, €210K for a splash of water! Nothing says “we care” like a fountain that now needs a two-year spa treatment to keep it from freezing in winter. 💦🥶 Good thing it’s not just another overpriced water feature—it’s “historically significant!” 😂
