Singapore – The European Union is ramping up its free trade discussions with Asian nations in response to the high tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, announced Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on Wednesday.
While negotiations with Washington remain a top priority, Sefcovic stressed that they will not proceed “at any cost” during a press briefing in Singapore.
“In the current geopolitical climate, we are making sure that the EU does not rely solely on one partner,” he stated.
“We are accelerating discussions with Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia,” he noted. “Additionally, we are strengthening our ties with India and commenced a new round of negotiations just last week.”
His remarks came after the signing of a trade agreement focused on digital issues between the EU and Singapore on Wednesday. (May 7, 2025)
