Merkem (Eurotoday) – A 31-year-old van driver narrowly escaped serious injury after a dramatic crash in Merkem, near Houthulst. The incident occurred when his vehicle veered off the Iepersteenweg and collided with a stationary lorry parked on the roadside.
According to local authorities, the driver miraculously managed to exit the wreckage on his own. Upon investigation, police determined that alcohol was a factor in the accident. As a result, his driver’s license was immediately suspended for 15 days.
“The van was torn apart on the right side, as was part of the truck. Miraculously, the driver was able to get out of his mangled cabin. He was slightly injured but did not have to go to the hospital. His driver’s license was revoked for 15 days because he had been drinking,” explained Commissioner Geert Provoost of the Polder police zone.
“The man was very lucky,” added Commissioner Provoost.
The force of the crash also dislodged a jeep being transported on the van’s trailer, which ended up on the roadway and sustained significant damage. Emergency services were called to clear debris from the scene.
“The truck that was hit also suffered heavy damage. The vehicles were towed away. The thirty-something can expect a hefty bill from the police judge,” noted Commissioner Provoost.
What Past Incidents Highlight the Dangers of Drunk Driving in West Flanders?
West Flanders has been the site of numerous severe accidents that underline the serious dangers of drunk driving. These cases have sparked major public outcry and growing demands for stricter traffic laws and enforcement.
One of the region’s most tragic recent crashes occurred along the E403 motorway near Ruddervoorde in August 2024. A 50-year-old driver, reportedly with a blood alcohol content three to four times over the legal limit, slammed into the rear of a car carrying a couple and their 8-year-old daughter. All three family members died on the scene.
The offending driver had a long history of traffic violations, including multiple convictions for drunk driving. Despite prior license suspensions, he had avoided imprisonment due to systemic lapses in enforcing penalties against repeat offenders. Following the fatal crash, he was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and other offenses.
In another case reported by The Brussels Times, a 23-year-old from Torhout killed a 20-year-old woman while driving under the influence. His license was revoked on the spot, showcasing immediate legal consequences for impaired driving.
The region continues to see rising cases involving alcohol-related incidents involving both young drivers and well-known figures. One such case involved a 20-year-old woman from Ostend who was caught driving with an alcohol level of 0.8 per mille – above the legal limit.
Additionally, a single-car crash in late 2024 involving Belgian actor Tom Waes—who was driving under the influence—sparked national debate on the responsibility of public figures and the broader dangers of intoxicated driving.
