The head of the Polish embassy in Germany, Jan Tombiński, expressed concerns about existing border controls at the German-Polish border, stating that they hinder daily traffic and impact the EU internal market. In an interview with Politico, he emphasized that Poland does not support the tightening of these controls.
These remarks came just days before the anticipated visit to Warsaw by Germany’s future Chancellor, Friedrich Merz.
According to Politico, Tombiński criticized the incoming German government’s intentions to impose stricter border regulations. He noted that the current controls are already problematic for daily movements and economic activities within the EU, stating, “We do not want tightening of border controls.”
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, which is set to join forces with the Social Democrats in a coalition government beginning Tuesday, has committed to a stronger approach on immigration in an effort to regain right-wing support.
Merz has pledged to implement stricter border controls from the outset of his administration.
When questioned about Poland’s willingness to accept asylum seekers, Tombiński highlighted that Warsaw is committed to its “obligations arising from EU legislation,” which includes reforms to the EU asylum system.
Merz, who vowed to strengthen relations with Germany’s neighbors, including Poland, and adopt a more proactive role on the European stage, is expected to visit Warsaw on Wednesday, where he will likely address his stringent border policies. (03.05.2025)
