Blankenberge Installs Additional Bins Following Influx of 40,000 Beachgoers

Blankenberge (Eurotoday) –
Following a surge of 40,000 visitors to Blankenberge, the coastal city has added extra waste bins and increased cleanup efforts. Alderman Sandy Buysschaert emphasized the importance of responsible behavior from those enjoying the beach.

According to VRT News, municipal workers in Blankenberge, located in Belgium’s West Flanders province, began cleaning the beach early on May 2, 2025. The cleanup started at 7 a.m. and was completed by 10 a.m., following an exceptionally crowded day on May 1, when warm spring weather attracted tens of thousands to the seaside.

City officials noted that the unusually high number of visitors resulted in large amounts of litter. Cleanup crews worked swiftly to ensure the beach would be welcoming for both residents and newcomers the next day.

How is Blankenberge preparing for more beach visitors this weekend?

Blankenberge is preparing for even more visitors over the upcoming weekend. Alderman Sandy Buysschaert, responsible for waste management, announced that the city is rolling out additional trash bins—a practice typically reserved for the peak summer season. The recent influx of visitors, around 40,000, created a significant waste management challenge.

Buysschaert described the scenario as a “perfect solar storm”—a combination of ideal weather and a public holiday that led to overwhelming crowds. To maintain a clean and pleasant environment, the city is proactively enhancing its infrastructure and cleanup operations.

The city is also considering sustainable, long-term improvements. One approach involves repurposing older bins, which were already scheduled for replacement, by deploying them during high-traffic days. Another initiative under review is the creation of a volunteer system. These volunteers would assist in maintaining cleanliness and encourage visitors to dispose of their waste responsibly.

“There were plans to replace 110 waste bins in the city anyway, so we could then possibly use the old ones as extra bins at peak times. We are also thinking about a system with volunteers who can help out at the busiest places at very busy times,”

said Alderman Sandy Buysschaert.

Beyond logistical efforts, Buysschaert underscored a deeper issue: the behavior of beachgoers. While providing more bins and increasing cleanups are effective supports, the crux of the matter lies in public awareness and individual responsibility.

She noted that while some bins were overflowing, others nearby remained largely unused—a sign that not everyone is making the effort to dispose of their waste appropriately. She expressed disappointment at this lack of consideration for shared public spaces.

Sharing a personal example, Buysschaert recalled how she and her family would always carry their trash until they found a proper bin. Her broader message was clear:

“Even with well-planned logistics and extra resources, maintaining a clean beach relies on a shared civic mindset where every individual takes responsibility for their actions and contributes to the cleanliness of the environment.”

Oh joy, nothing screams “high holiday season” like a bin bonanza in Blankenberge! 🎉 I suppose it’s a case of “one man’s trash is another man’s beachfront treasure” – just don’t forget to carry your rubbish home, folks! 🙄🌊

Isn’t it just brilliant that a beach can attract 40,000 sun-seekers and the solution is simply “more bins”? Next, we’ll be putting up signs saying, “Please, use your brain before you toss your sandwich wrapper” 😅.

So, let me get this straight: they’ve got 40,000 beachgoers and a bin shortage? Sounds like the perfect recipe for a seaside art installation titled “Mount Trashmore”! 😂💩

So, let me get this straight: Blankenberge needs more bins for the 40,000 beach enthusiasts who apparently can’t tell a bin from a sandcastle? Bravo! Maybe next year we can just hand out trash bags with the sunscreen. 😂🗑️

Isn’t it charming how Blankenberge thinks adding extra bins will magically transform beachgoers into responsible citizens? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they should just install a few signs that say “Do your bit, mate!”—that oughta do the trick! 🏖️💩
