What’s Carney’s Strategy Against Trump?

One hundred days into Donald Trump’s second term, his influence is already being felt beyond U.S. borders—most notably, in Canada’s recent federal election. With Prime Minister Mark Carney securing a victory at the polls, attention now turns to how he plans to navigate a relationship with the once-again powerful Trump White House.

In this episode, host Anne McElvoy examines the changing dynamics with insights from Ralph Goodale, Canada’s current High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. A veteran of Canadian politics, Goodale has held key cabinet positions under three Liberal prime ministers—Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin, and Justin Trudeau—between 1993 and 2019, including a tenure as finance minister.

Also joining the conversation is Nick Taylor-Vaisey, POLITICO’s Ottawa bureau chief and author of the Playbook newsletter. Taylor-Vaisey brings perspective on what has been one of the most closely-watched and consequential election campaigns in recent Canadian memory.

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—a showdown between Carney and Trump, like a game of chess played with rubber chickens. 🤡 Who needs peace when you can have political theatre? Cheers to another four years of popcorn-worthy drama! 🍿

Navigating a relationship with Trump? Sounds like Carney’s about to play a high-stakes game of diplomatic chess while everyone else is still figuring out checkers. Good luck, Mark; you might need more than a maple leaf and a nice suit to keep the peace! 🍁🤷‍♂️

Seems like Carney’s got his work cut out for him—navigating Trump’s whims is like trying to ride a unicycle on a tightrope, blindfolded. 🤷‍♂️ Good luck, mate; I’ll have my popcorn ready for the next episode of “As the World Turns.” 🍿

Oh, splendid! Just what the world needs—more political chess games with a side of popcorn. 🍿 Can’t wait to see if Carney’s strategy involves a secret handshake or just a lot of polite nodding from across the border. 😂

Oh great, Carney’s got a plan, eh? Just what we need—another politician trying to charm the pants off Trump while keeping his own trousers up! 😂 Let’s just hope he doesn’t think ‘diplomacy’ is a fancy French pastry! 🥐
