Moldova: Parliamentary Elections on September 28 to Solidify Commitment to Europe

Chisinau – Moldova is set to hold its legislative elections on September 28, as announced by Parliament on Thursday. This election will shape the future of the nation, which finds itself navigating between its European ambitions and the influence of Russia.

“Our priority is to ensure stability and work towards joining the European Union within the next four years,” stated President Maia Sandu, who has distanced Moldova from Russia following the onset of the war in neighboring Ukraine and has initiated accession talks with Brussels.

During her address to the 101-member parliament, where her center-right Action and Solidarity party holds a majority following a significant victory in the July 2021 elections, Sandu emphasized these goals.

The upcoming elections are anticipated to be closely contested, following a contentious presidential race and last year’s EU referendum, both rife with allegations of Russian interference.

Recent elections were marred by extensive vote-buying claims, prompting police investigations into over 140,000 citizens. (April 17, 2025)
