Tongerlo’s Historic Keyartmolen from 1139 to Be Restored for €150,000

Tongerlo (Eurotoday) – The historic Keyartmolen in Tongerlo, originally built in 1139, is undergoing restoration costing €150,000. Owner Gert Zeelmaekers has a vision of transforming the centuries-old watermill into the Keyart Distillery, while safeguarding its historical essence.

Located in the Antwerp province of Belgium, the Keyartmolen is a remarkable example of medieval engineering. After years of neglect, the restoration efforts are now focused on repairing the structure’s roof, walls, and wooden framework to ensure its preservation for future generations.

In addition to structural renovations, the mill’s internal mechanisms are being refurbished to make them operational once again. The overall project cost stands at €150,000, with the government contributing 40% in recognition of the cultural and historical significance of preserving heritage sites like this one.

“For centuries, mills were the engines of our prosperity,”

said Wets.

“Today, they are still popular landmarks. A beautiful old mill appeals to almost everyone.”

Is Tongerlo’s 900-year-old Keyartmolen set for a new life?

Gert Zeelmaekers, the current owner, is aiming to go beyond basic restoration. His plan is to breathe new life into the Keyartmolen by establishing a boutique distillery, which will serve both as a tribute to the mill’s long history and as a gathering place for the community, offering locally crafted beverages.

“We are very much looking forward to bringing this historic place back to life and transforming it into a vibrant meeting place.”

The Keyartmolen is one of the region’s oldest watermills, with its first written mention dating back to 1139. It remained in one family’s possession for an impressive 500 years, playing a crucial role in the local economy during that time.

In 1635, the mill was acquired by a Spanish soldier. Over the following centuries, it passed through the hands of numerous owners, each adding their chapter to the mill’s legacy. Significant structural changes occurred in the 1800s, when the mill was rebuilt using stone and brick rather than wood, significantly increasing its durability. Today, that very structure still stands as a testament to centuries of resilience and ingenuity.

Oh, splendid! €150,000 to turn a glorified bucket of bricks from 1139 into a trendy distillery. Just what we need—another place for tourists to sip overpriced gin while pretending to appreciate history! 🍸💸

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—€150,000 to turn a 900-year-old water wheel into a posh gin factory. Why bother with modern problems when we can just sip on history, eh? 🍸😏

€150,000 to restore a mill that’s older than most of our national debts? Brilliant! At least we’ll have a fancy place to sip overpriced gin while pretending we care about history. 🍸😏

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “modern investment” quite like pouring €150k into a glorified waterwheel from the Middle Ages. Can’t wait to sip artisanal spirits while reminiscing about the good old days of 1139 when life was just a tad less complicated! 🍻😏
