Skopje – The accession process to the European Union must be objective and grounded in merit-based criteria. The Republic of North Macedonia has been a candidate nation since 2005, and I firmly believe it deserves to already be part of the EU. I am hopeful that the ongoing bilateral dispute with Bulgaria will be resolved swiftly, and Hungary stands ready to assist both parties in this matter, stated Janos Boka, Hungary’s Minister for European Affairs, during his visit to Skopje.
His comments were made in response to a journalist’s inquiry about North Macedonia’s Euro-integration journey, particularly concerning constitutional amendments and Skopje’s request for assurances that the conditions posed by Sofia would be the last.
Addressing concerns from London that staying outside the EU could destabilize the Western Balkans, Boka expressed his belief that both the United Kingdom and the EU have a vested interest in the region’s stability and noted that he trusts the EU is taking all necessary measures to ensure that stability.
– Hungary is actively working to reinvigorate the Western Balkans integration process as both a member of the EU and during its presidency, reinforcing the region’s European perspective, as this is the best way to ensure stability, Boka mentioned before attending an open lecture at the University of Skopje, which was also joined by Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Viktorija Trajkov.
Boka praised the strong cooperation with the Macedonian Government and highlighted Hungary’s substantial support for the country’s European ambitions. He reiterated Hungary’s commitment to continuing its assistance and guidance in the Euro-integration process. (April 10, 2025)
