Zelzate (Eurotoday) – The municipality of Zelzate is introducing stricter regulations for night shops, citing concerns about noise and the sale of alcohol to minors. Under new rules, future night shops must be located at least 400 meters apart. Alderman Martin Acke emphasizes the importance of stricter oversight while avoiding the stigmatization of shop owners.
The town of Zelzate has expressed growing concern about the operation of night shops. According to Alderman Martin Acke, many of these establishments were granted approval without thorough inspection. Subsequent evaluations revealed several issues.
Some shops were found to lack appropriate documentation and were not in compliance with local regulations. In response, Zelzate is modifying its policies to ensure more consistent and thorough inspections, aiming to keep the community both safe and peaceful.
Why is Zelzate enforcing tighter rules for night shops?
As part of the changes, the town has introduced a rule mandating that any new night shop must be at least 400 meters away from an existing one. The intention is to prevent an overconcentration of such businesses in specific areas, especially near residential zones.
Currently, there are already two night shops located near each other on the Grote Markt. While these shops will be allowed to continue operating, the new distancing requirement will apply to all upcoming applications. The municipality aims to balance commercial activity with community well-being.
“This is a regulation to help prevent problems in the future. The rules, therefore, also apply to telephone shops, which are currently almost non-existent in Zelzate,”
Alderman Martin Acke explained.
He noted that while residents have raised concerns about noise and behavior around night shops, the city has not yet requested official figures from the police. Acke stressed that the initiative is not about labeling all night shops as problematic but about managing the concerns expressed by the community.
One of the key issues mentioned by residents includes the alleged sale of alcohol to underage individuals. These violations have prompted the local authorities to implement tighter controls and ensure compliance with existing laws.
Alderman Acke clarified that the aim is not to discredit owners of night shops. Rather, the goal is to improve adherence to regulations. He believes many shopkeepers are aware that certain rules are not being followed properly.
Both the city administration and local business owners recognize the need for improvement. The effort is intended to be collaborative, seeking solutions without conflict. Ultimately, Zelzate wants to promote a safe, orderly, and quiet environment for all residents and visitors.

Stricter rules for night shops? Brilliant idea! I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of “Where’s the Next Shop” while trying to find a late-night snack without bumping into a rogue kebab stand? 🍕😂

Seems like Zelzate’s found the magic formula to turn a late-night kebab run into a tactical military operation—400 meters apart, just like the distance I keep from my mother-in-law! 😂 Cheers to a quieter night life, where the only thing louder than a beer bottle is the sound of regulations rolling in! 🍻🚫

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says ‘community spirit’ quite like ensuring your local night shops are 400 meters apart—next, we’ll be regulating the distance between pub tables! 🍻👀
