Paris – Following Donald Trump’s unexpected announcement on Wednesday regarding a temporary halt to tariff increases, Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for a strong response from the European Commission. He stated, “Europe must continue to pursue all necessary countermeasures,” noting that tariffs are set at 25% for steel, aluminum, and automobiles, and 10% for other goods.
Macron specifically highlighted the importance of the European Union safeguarding itself “from imports from third countries,” particularly China, which still faces maximum tariffs. He warned that an influx of products from China could significantly disrupt European markets.
The French president reiterated that the European Commission’s goal is “clear: to negotiate the elimination of these unfair tariffs and secure a balanced agreement free from asymmetry.” He expressed concern that this three-month delay creates “90 days of uncertainty for all our businesses, both across the Atlantic and beyond.”
“We are justified in our fight, as jobs and the livelihoods of our communities are at stake,” Macron asserted. (April 11, 2025)
