Sint-Pieters-Woluwe (Eurotoday) – The private secretary to the CEO of Goodyear Tire remains in custody amid ongoing murder charges. The Brussels council chamber has upheld her detention as the investigation continues. The suspect was arrested last Friday after authorities gathered evidence connecting her to the murder of her boss’s wife. The victim was killed in mid-March by a masked assailant inside her residence in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe.
The personal assistant, who worked closely with the Goodyear executive, has been identified by law enforcement as the primary suspect in the murder. The fatal stabbing occurred in mid-March when the victim, alone in her apartment, was attacked by an unknown individual wearing a face covering. Authorities detained the suspect during a targeted raid in Steenokkerzeel on Friday. She continues to be held as the investigation develops.
The incident happened on the evening of March 17 when the victim returned to her apartment on Roger Vandendriesschelaan at approximately 8 p.m. According to police reports, a masked individual forced entry or may have followed her inside before carrying out the fatal attack. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene shortly after her husband discovered her body.
Investigators noted that valuable jewelry and luxury watches, estimated to be worth tens of thousands of euros, were missing from the apartment, suggesting a potential motive involving theft.
Crime Trends in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe and the Brussels Region
Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, one of Brussels’ wealthier districts, typically experiences lower rates of violent crime relative to other municipalities in the region. In 2022, the Belgian Federal Police registered 16,578 violent crimes and 42 homicides across the Brussels Capital Region, a moderate increase compared to previous years.
Despite its generally low violent crime rates, Sint-Pieters-Woluwe has seen a rise in burglaries and thefts targeting expensive assets. A 7% increase in home invasions was recorded in Brussels during 2023 compared to the prior year, often involving luxury properties. Statistically, 23% of violent burglaries now involve perpetrators using face masks, a trend reflected in this recent high-profile case.
Belgium’s homicide conviction rate stands at around 68%, with successful prosecutions often hinging on forensic evidence and security footage. Notably, only 12% of 2022 homicide cases involved suspects with familial ties to the victims, indicating that most violent crimes are committed by individuals outside the immediate household.
Suspects typically remain in pre-trial detention for extended periods—between 6 and 18 months—due to procedural requirements. Although the publicity surrounding this case could expedite legal proceedings, precedent from past similar cases—such as a corporate executive homicide in Uccle—suggests the legal process may still take over two years to reach trial.
