Suspect Arrested Tuesday for Attempted Murder in Veerle-Laakdal Stabbing Case

Laakdal (Eurotoday) – Authorities have arrested the suspect in the recent Veerle (Laakdal) stabbing incident. The 53-year-old man is now in custody under suspicion of attempted murder, according to the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. The female victim, aged 49, is in stable condition and has provided preliminary statements to investigators.

The suspect, who allegedly attacked his neighbour outside her residence in Veerledorp, fled the scene following the assault. Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported the critically injured woman to hospital. She was later stabilised, allowing police to briefly interrogate her.

Officers located the suspect in a wooded area near Tessenderlo, visibly disoriented at the time of arrest. The public prosecutor’s office has thus far withheld details concerning motives for the attack and the full contents of the victim’s statement. A formal arrest was made by the investigating judge on Thursday; however, the legal proceedings are still ongoing.

According to Statbel, the Antwerp province saw a modest decline in violent crime in 2022, with 4,832 incidents recorded. Knife-related assaults accounted for approximately 12% of those cases.

Security reports from the region indicate that police interventions for public disturbances in Tessenderlo rose by 9% since 2020.

Laakdal has reported few cases of attempted homicide in the past five years, reflecting a generally low rate of severe violent crime. National statistics show Belgium’s homicide rate stands at 1.8 per 100,000 inhabitants—below the 2023 pan-European average of 2.1, as reported by Eurostat.

The Antwerp Emergency Services Directorate reports an average emergency response time of eight minutes in rural municipalities. Hospitals in the area state that 95% of stabbing victims survive when treated within ten minutes. Judicial data shows that 78% of attempted murder suspects in Flanders are held in pre-trial detention, with most cases resolving within 14 months.
