Luxembourg – During a meeting of EU trade ministers in Luxembourg, Slovenian State Secretary for Economic Affairs Dejan Židan highlighted the need for a measured and composed response from the EU to the American tariffs. He expressed support for the European Commission’s strategy, which includes negotiations with the U.S., preparing countermeasures, and seeking to diversify trade with other nations.
“Slovenia backs the European Commission’s initiatives and values its restraint in avoiding impulsive actions in this situation. It is vital that we approach this matter with sobriety and caution. Slovenia aligns with the EU’s proposed responses, emphasizing the importance of strengthening competitiveness and the integrity of the EU’s single market while engaging in negotiations with the U.S. and diversifying trade relations,” stated Židan, as reported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Tourism, and Sports.
The EU ministers also discussed President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on most imports from various trading partners, which impacts around 60 countries and particularly affects the EU. The U.S. has also implemented separate tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars.
In addition, discussions included trade relations with China, with Židan underscoring the significance of China as a key strategic partner. He advocated for establishing a medium-term agreement with China aimed at gradually correcting the trade imbalance. “It is crucial to formulate a strategy for reducing this imbalance, followed by controlled and strategic progress,” the State Secretary remarked.
