Aarschot (Eurotoday) – Illegal waste dumping has taken place in Rillaar, Aarschot, where items such as a mattress and bed frame were found discarded. Despite the availability of free disposal services, the local waste manager expressed confusion over why someone would resort to dumping. The nearby town of Scherpenheuvel is facing similar issues. Mayor Koen Peetermans has responded to the incidents.
The waste was discovered over the weekend along the Herreboschvoetweg in the Rillaar neighborhood. Among the items found were a mattress and pieces of bed wood—described by the waste manager as
“half a bedroom.”
Officials highlighted their frustration, noting that the city provides free options for proper disposal. Residents can bring up to 300 kilograms of wood to local recycling facilities at no cost and can also dispose of mattresses for free. This makes the illegal dumping particularly baffling to authorities.
Why is illegal dumping still happening in Aarschot and Scherpenheuvel despite free disposal options?
City officials argue that such actions show disregard not only for the environment but also for the systems in place to assist residents in disposing of waste responsibly. Although affordable and convenient solutions exist, some individuals continue to litter public and natural spaces.
In Scherpenheuvel, residents have voiced concerns after trash was found illegally dumped near Groenhoef. A pile of waste was discovered along a dirt path, prompting a strong reaction from Mayor Koen Peetermans. He emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable, particularly in the town’s scenic and natural areas. Local police are investigating the incident and are searching the garbage for clues—like documents with addresses—that could identify those responsible.
Aarschot authorities are working to curb illegal dumping with the help of mobile surveillance cameras. These cameras are rotated to known dumping hotspots to monitor and catch offenders. Anyone caught will face heavy fines.
The city aims to reinforce the message that illegal dumping is a punishable offense. In addition to fines, violators may also be required to cover the cleanup costs of the mess they leave behind.
