The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo has escalated into a significant humanitarian crisis. “Over 20 million individuals require humanitarian aid, with more than 7 million people displaced within the country,” stated Hadja Lahbib, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, at a roundtable conference she is hosting on Friday in collaboration with the United Nations and the African Union.
Earlier this year, the European Union committed 60 million euros in assistance, raising the total for 2023 to 100 million euros. Additionally, the EU has established a humanitarian airbridge that has successfully delivered 44 tons of aid supplies to the Masisi region. Plans are in place for more flights and ground convoys to facilitate the transport of further humanitarian aid to European partner organizations operating in the area.
The eastern region of Congo has suffered from ongoing conflicts and violence for decades. However, the situation has deteriorated in recent months due to advances made by the M23 rebel group, which is reportedly backed by the Rwandan military. In late January, M23 seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, followed by the capture of Bukavu, the capital of adjacent South Kivu province, in mid-February.
