Jaguar Land Rover Halts U.S. Vehicle Shipments Following Trump’s Import Tariffs
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the British luxury car manufacturer, announced it will temporarily suspend vehicle shipments to the United States in response to newly imposed tariffs on foreign-made cars by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement released to multiple media outlets, JLR said it is implementing the pause this month as a “short-term action” while the company evaluates its long-term strategy. “As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions, including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans,” the automaker stated.
The U.S. is JLR’s largest market in terms of revenue, making the company particularly vulnerable to the impact of Trump’s escalating trade policies. Nearly 25 percent of JLR’s global vehicle output is exported to the American market.
The decision comes amid growing concerns that new U.S. trade rules could severely affect the British automotive sector. According to The Times, which first reported on the shipment suspension, Jaguar Land Rover and the Cowley Mini plant are among the most at risk. All told, approximately one in eight U.K.-manufactured vehicles is destined for the U.S. market.
Analysts from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) warned that the tariffs could jeopardize more than 25,000 jobs in the U.K.’s auto manufacturing industry if the situation isn’t resolved.
As the trade tensions mount, JLR has not yet specified when shipments will resume, pending the development of revised trading arrangements.
