Ninove (Eurotoday) – Ninove Mayor Guy D’haeseleer has been hospitalized due to hepatitis. During his recovery, interim mayor Malcolm Malfroot is leading city council operations and overseeing municipal responsibilities.
D’haeseleer was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, diagnosed with hepatitis — a serious illness that affects liver function. His medical team is regularly monitoring his condition, with his physician, Dr. Malfroot, reporting a slight improvement in his health. Doctors plan to determine by Thursday, April 10, whether a liver transplant will be necessary.
Will Mayor D’haeseleer Make a Full Recovery?
According to his stepdaughter, Malik Sclacmender, Mayor D’haeseleer is facing the situation with realism and mental readiness. She explained that if no transplant is required, recovery could take approximately three months. In the event he does need a new liver, recovery might extend to three or four months.
D’haeseleer has mentally prepared for all possible outcomes. Medical professionals note that hepatitis can stem from various causes, including viral infections, and can result in severe liver damage. In some cases, a transplant becomes essential to save the patient’s life.
The city council convened briefly online to address the situation and agreed to divide the mayor’s responsibilities temporarily. This decision ensures that the city continues to operate effectively during D’haeseleer’s absence.
Acting mayor Malcolm Malfroot stated that distributing the mayor’s duties equally among council members was necessary to maintain smooth governance. The council aims to uphold city management while D’haeseleer focuses on his recovery.
At this point, the council has not discussed long-term plans should the mayor’s condition fail to improve. For now, Malfroot emphasized their collective optimism, saying,
“We’re focusing on the good things happening.”
The council remains hopeful for Mayor D’haeseleer’s recovery and is committed to maintaining city operations in the meantime. All efforts are centered on a positive outcome, with contingency discussions postponed in light of their optimistic outlook.

Oh, look at that! Ninove’s got itself a two-for-one deal on mayors—one in the hospital and the other getting a crash course in governance. Just what we needed, a live-action episode of “Who Wants to Be a Mayor?” 😂🍻

Looks like Ninove’s got a new mayor in the form of Malfroot – sounds like a bad sitcom where the understudy takes center stage while the star’s out with a bit of liver trouble. Hope the council’s got a solid plan B… or at least a good supply of Belgian beer for when he gets back! 🍻😏

Looks like Ninove is in for a bit of a merry-go-round, eh? D’haeseleer’s taking a sabbatical for a liver makeover while Malfroot gets to play mayor—just what every city needs, a temporary head honcho juggling the responsibilities like a clown at a circus! 🤡

Looks like Ninove’s mayor decided to take an extended holiday at the hospital—who knew hepatitis was the new wellness retreat? Meanwhile, Malfroot’s got the interim gig; hope he’s not just winging it like a dodgy taxi driver in Brussels! 😏🛵

So, the mayor’s off on an extended holiday in the hospital while Malfroot gets to play the role of “Mayor Lite”? 🍻 Makes you wonder if D’haeseleer’s just auditioning for a new season of “The Real Mayors of Ninove!” 😂

Ah, nothing like a little liver drama to spice up Ninove’s political scene! 🙄 I suppose it’s all hands on deck with Malfroot at the helm—let’s hope he doesn’t confuse city council with a pub quiz. 🍻
