Bratislava – Slovakia has secured funding from the European Union (EU) to support energy projects aimed at the reconstruction of Ukraine. A total of 101 million euros will be allocated for these initiatives, as announced by Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) during a press conference alongside Rastislav Podhorec, General Director of Eximbank, according to TASR.
Minister Blanár highlighted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs (MZVEZ), in collaboration with the Slovak Agency for International Development Assistance (SAMRS), applied for the funding, which is earmarked for projects agreed upon by the governments of Ukraine and Slovakia. He noted that 11 organizations had participated in the EU’s call for projects under the Ukrainian Investment Framework, with Slovakia being one of the eight successful candidates. MZVEZ submitted the proposal in conjunction with Eximbank.
Blanár emphasized the positive impact of these projects on Slovakia, particularly in supporting local businesses engaged in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.
He reminded attendees that last autumn, the government approved a framework for Slovakia’s role in Ukraine’s reconstruction, which includes projects like modernizing the transmission system of the Mukachevo – Veľké Kapušany – Lemešany interconnector. Additionally, plans are in place to reconstruct the 400 kV substation in Mukachevo, construct a new 400 kV substation in Uzhhorod, and establish a hydroelectric power plant designed for an independent green energy hub.
“We anticipate that the total cost for the reconstruction and development of these projects will reach 100 million euros, with 20 million euros financed through grants and 88 million euros through Eximbank. Of this amount, 80 million euros will be guaranteed by the European Commission, which will ultimately strengthen the security and stability of Ukraine’s energy network,” Podhorec added, noting that these initiatives will primarily benefit the western regions of Ukraine, which have a higher population density.
The funds will be directed towards two Ukrainian energy firms responsible for operating the country’s energy network. Slovakia, through SAMRS, will assist Ukraine in preparing public procurement processes, allowing Slovak businesses to participate in the reconstruction efforts. (March 31)
