Bratislava – Slovakia expresses its support for the European Commission’s (EC) decision to pursue ongoing negotiations with the United States regarding import tariffs until the very end. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) conveyed this sentiment during a phone conversation with EC President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday. He stated that a trade war between the U.S. and the rest of the world would be detrimental to both parties, according to TASR’s report.
“Today, I had a phone discussion with EC President Ursula von der Leyen. The conversation centered around the tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Slovakia,” Fico mentioned. “I informed the EC President of my plans to engage with car manufacturers in Slovakia and assured her that I would present all relevant proposals from these discussions to the EC,” he added.
Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the issue of the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic affecting Slovakia and its potential impact on the Central European region.
“We agreed to explore joint solutions for compensating losses. I expressed my gratitude for the involvement of EU experts, who confirmed that Slovakia is managing the infection effectively and in compliance with European regulations,” the Prime Minister stated. (31-March)
