At the annual Airlines for Europe (A4E) Aviation Summit in Brussels, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, unveiled the EU’s strategy aimed at fostering a robust, competitive, and sustainable air transport sector.
Mr. Tzitzikostas addressed the ninth edition of the Aviation Summit, highlighting its significance as Europe navigates a rapidly changing global environment, where maintaining competitiveness is becoming a pivotal aspect of EU policy. He remarked, “Airlines play a crucial role in connectivity, economic growth, and social advancement, serving as a fundamental component of this discourse.”
During his remarks, Mr. Tzitzikostas underscored the vital importance of air transport in enhancing connectivity across Europe. He pointed out that air travel has bridged gaps between citizens and regions, unlocking business opportunities and fostering innovation, thus alleviating isolation for many areas. He also noted the interlinked nature of air transport and tourism development—the latter being a key area of his responsibilities—where each sector generates opportunities for the other.
Safety emerged as the Commissioner’s primary focus. Although European air transport is currently thriving, he cautioned against complacency, stating, “We cannot afford to rest on our laurels.” He identified key challenges for the sector, including competitiveness, innovation, safety, autonomy, and sustainability.
In addressing the issue of carbon emissions, Mr. Tzitzikostas highlighted that the drive for environmental sustainability should not compromise competitiveness. He noted that the EU is actively pursuing initiatives to enhance competitiveness through a forthcoming revision of aviation services regulations, aimed at bolstering international competitiveness, reducing administrative burdens, and reforming airport economic regulations.
The Commissioner also touched upon passenger rights, asserting that while existing protections are strong, they can be further enhanced: “We need regulations that are straightforward, comprehensible, and equitable for both passengers and the industry. Progress is being made in negotiations regarding the reform of passenger rights. It is vital to maintain the financial stability of airlines. We must avoid imposing regulations that could economically strain the industry and stifle growth. The objective of the upcoming passenger rights review is to strike a balance between ensuring robust passenger protections and maintaining airlines’ financial health, which requires collaboration from all stakeholders.” He urged airlines to develop a common standard for cabin baggage allowances.
Mr. Tzitzikostas further discussed flight safety and the state of European airspace, stating, “European airspace is secure for flights. However, capacity does not always align with demand, particularly in the summer months. The EU is at the forefront of innovation in air traffic management. We must continue to advocate for greater flexibility, minimize airspace fragmentation, and promote sustainability.” He specifically mentioned the introduction of a “new service model” aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
Highlighting the EU’s leadership in research and innovation in sustainable aircraft technology, the Commissioner acknowledged the advancements being made by the European aerospace sector in developing efficient engines.
In conclusion, while addressing airline executives, Mr. Tzitzikostas stated, “Air transport has contributed immensely to Europe. By connecting individuals, businesses, and economies, it has helped the EU uphold its foundational principles of freedom, unity, and equality. However, our journey is just beginning. A new chapter lies ahead, and it is up to you to shape it. Your achievements will reflect Europe’s success as we move towards a future that is competitive, equitable, sustainable, and distinctly European.”
On the sidelines of the Summit, the Commissioner held discussions with top executives from European airlines, including individual meetings with Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Group; Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM; and Luis Gallego, CEO of International Airlines Group (British Airways-Iberia).
