BRUSSELS (ANP/AFP) – A spokesperson stated, “Putin is a criminal wanted for war crimes, and we will not engage with or comment on his propaganda.” They emphasized the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was democratically elected, asserting, “Unless the Ukrainian people call for elections, no one else should advocate for them.”
In a speech on Friday, Putin expressed interest in discussing with the United States, Europe, and Moscow’s allies the establishment of a “transitional government in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN.” He suggested this could occur if Ukraine organizes democratic presidential elections, leading to the formation of a “competent government” that earns the people’s trust. With this new government in place, Putin indicated he would be open to initiating peace negotiations.
This is not the first occasion that Putin has questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy as a democratically elected official. U.S. President Donald Trump previously referred to Zelensky as “a dictator without elections,” which also faced backlash from the Commission.
It is important to note that Ukraine’s Constitution prohibits elections during times of war.
