Russia and Ukraine Exchange Large-Scale Drone Strikes Overnight

Moscow (Eurotoday) – Russia and Ukraine exchanged heavy aerial attacks overnight Saturday, with both countries reporting more than 100 drones over their respective regions.

The exchange comes less than 24 hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss elements of the American proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the conflict with Ukraine.

Volgograd regional Gov. Andrei Bocharov confirmed that falling drone debris had sparked a fire in the Krasnoarmeysky district of the city near a Lukoil oil refinery, but provided no further details. Nearby airports temporarily suspended flights, local media reported. No casualties were recorded.

What damage did Ukrainian drones cause in Russia?

Ukraine’s forces have targeted the Volgograd refinery multiple times since Moscow launched its full-scale offensive against Ukraine more than three years ago, with the most recent attack occurring in a drone raid on Feb. 15.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that it had intercepted 126 Ukrainian drones, 64 of which were taken down over the Volgograd area. Officials also reported drone interceptions over the Voronezh, Belgorod, Rostov, Bryansk, and Kursk regions.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force stated that Russia had launched a barrage of 178 drones and two ballistic missiles over the country overnight. The assault included a mix of Shahed-type attack drones and smaller drones designed to complicate air defenses. In total, 130 drones were destroyed, while 38 more failed to reach their targets.

Russia targeted energy installations, causing significant damage, according to Ukraine’s private energy company DTEK. The attacks struck energy infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa regions, leaving some residents without electricity.

“The damage is significant. Energy workers are already on-site. We are doing everything possible to restore power to homes as soon as possible,”

The energy firm stated.

Two days earlier, Ukraine launched its largest-ever drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding region, killing at least three workers at a meat warehouse, injuring 17 others, and causing a temporary shutdown at four of the capital’s airports, Russian officials reported. A total of 343 drones were downed over Russia, including 91 over the Moscow area and 126 over western Kursk, where Ukrainian forces have been retreating. Drones were also intercepted near the Kursk nuclear power plant, according to the defense ministry.

Another day, another round of aerial tag – who knew the skies over Eastern Europe would turn into a game of drone chess? 🎹 Just when you thought diplomacy was in vogue, the drones swoop in to remind us that negotiating is so last season! 🥳

Oh, splendid! Nothing says diplomacy like a friendly game of aerial tag. I must say, it’s truly inspiring to watch two nations exchange holiday gifts in the form of drones instead of, you know, burnt sausages and beer! 🥴✈️

Ah, nothing like a friendly game of “who can drop the most drones” to spice up diplomatic relations, right? 🍿 I suppose it’s just another day in the office for these lads—real charmers, those drones! 💼✨
