Strasbourg, France (dpa) – In a recent non-binding resolution, European Union lawmakers emphasized that actions related to defense should be conducted “in a manner akin to wartime” and called for increased support for Ukraine.
The resolution highlighted that “Europe is currently facing the most significant military threat to its territorial integrity since the Cold War’s conclusion,” and was adopted with 419 votes in favor, 204 against, and 46 abstentions.
It identified Russia as “the most significant direct and indirect threat to the EU,” noting that the recent changes in U.S. policies regarding the Ukraine conflict have heightened security concerns within the EU.
The document urged the EU to expedite its procedures in response to war or other major security crises and advocated for establishing a European pillar within NATO that could operate autonomously if necessary.
Members of the European Parliament called for stronger alliances with like-minded partners and for reduced dependence on non-EU nations to enhance the bloc’s security.
Regarding support for Ukraine, the resolution urged EU member states, international partners, and NATO allies “to remove all restrictions on utilizing Western weapon systems supplied to Ukraine against military targets within Russian territory,” according to a press release dated March 12.
