Berlin (Eurotoday) – The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has filed urgent legal motions with the constitutional court challenging plans to convene the country’s outgoing parliament to discuss a half-trillion-euro spending package, a court spokesperson stated.
The appeals, filed by several opposition AfD legislators, seek to stop the session, during which the Bundestag parliament would consider constitutional changes to authorize a massive spending increase on defense and infrastructure.
A few days ago, it was reported that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party would file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court next week over plans to raise new debt through a special fund.
Why is the far-right challenging Germany’s €500 billion spending plan?
Germany’s likely next chancellor, conservative leader Friedrich Merz, and the Social Democrats (SPD), with whom he hopes to form a government, intend to raise new debt and remove restrictive borrowing regulations in a major shift in fiscal policy.
Analysts say obstacles are mounting for their plans to establish a 500-billion-euro infrastructure fund and abandon constitutional limits on borrowing, known as the ‘debt brake’—plans they hope to have approved by the outgoing parliament.
“The old Bundestag (lower house) is at best legitimate to act in emergencies, but not to set a fundamental course for the future,”
said the AfD’s Stephan Brandner.
“This ignores the will of the voters as expressed two weeks ago in the election,”
he added.
The AfD, which, like Trump, opposes further military assistance to Ukraine, has criticized the borrowing plans as an “orgy of debt,” questioning the legitimacy of the old parliament to make major decisions. Meanwhile, the Left party—on the opposite end of the political spectrum—has also threatened legal action.
Merz and the SPD aim to pass the plans in the outgoing parliament, where support from the Greens would be enough to secure the required two-thirds majority. The Bundestag is set to vote on the measures on March 18 before the new parliament is inaugurated on March 25. After that, the AfD and the Left, both of which oppose increased military spending, would have the votes to block both moves.

Looks like the AfD is really channeling their inner David and Goliath, taking on a €500 billion spending plan with nothing but a legal challenge and a prayer. 🤷♂️ Maybe they think the constitutional court is the new UEFA—everyone loves a good underdog story! 😂

Oh, fantastic! Just when you thought the circus couldn’t get any more entertaining, the AfD decides to challenge the whole €500 billion spending spree. I suppose they think they’re the guardians of fiscal responsibility while the rest of us just want to upgrade the Autobahn! 😂💰

Oh, splendid! Just what we need—more legal wrangling from the AfD about a spending spree that would make even Scrooge McDuck raise an eyebrow. 🇩🇪💰 Can’t wait to see them turn the Bundestag into a courtroom drama! 🏛️😂

Oh, look at the AfD, the knights in shining armor fighting against the “orgy of debt”—because who needs infrastructure when you can just sit around and reminisce about the good old days of fiscal restraint? 😂🤑

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “responsible governance” quite like a far-right party throwing a legal tantrum over a spending package – I mean, who needs infrastructure when you can just sue your way to a better economy? 🙄💸

Oh, brilliant move by the AfD! Nothing screams “I love democracy” quite like a legal challenge to a spending plan that might actually help the country. 🥳 Can’t wait for their next act—maybe they’ll sue the sun for rising too early? 🌅

Oh, look at the AfD trying to flex their legal muscles over a spending package—how charming! 🤷♂️ Perhaps they think the constitutional court is a friendly neighborhood café where they can order a side of “let’s stall progress” with their coffee. ☕️💸
