Brussels (Eurotoday) – The European Union and India are set to launch the tenth round of talks on a proposed free trade agreement in Brussels. The move comes amid concerns about potential tariff threats from the Trump administration.
India and the EU bloc will begin the tenth round of negotiations for a proposed free trade agreement on Monday in Brussels, against the backdrop of Trump tariff threats, an official confirmed.
Negotiations are expected to focus on resolving outstanding issues to finalize the agreement by the end of this year.
During a recent visit by EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic, both sides discussed mechanisms to accelerate progress toward a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement.
Key Focus Areas in India-EU Trade Talks
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently agreed to conclude the ambitious India-EU free trade agreement this year, following concerns over the Trump administration’s threat of increased tariffs.
The two sides are scheduled to hold the tenth round of negotiations for the FTA from March 10-14 in Brussels,
the official stated.
In June 2022, the EU and India resumed negotiations after an eight-year hiatus. Talks were stalled in 2013 due to disagreements over market access. Both sides are also working on an investment protection blank”>deal and an agreement on Geographical Indications (GIs).
According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), key sticking points include agricultural tariffs, particularly commitments on dairy and wine imports, automobile tariffs, and regulatory barriers affecting labor-intensive goods.
India is reluctant to reduce auto import duties and remains cautious about committing to EU demands on sustainability and labor standards. Services trade is another contested issue, with India pushing for greater mobility for professionals and data security recognition under the EU’s GDPR framework (General Data Protection Regulation).
